MUCH TO MAIL

18.08.2007 - 29.09.2007

Peter Nettesheim, sculpture

The work’s title is a reference to our growing day-to-day awareness and use of communication media. The sculptural concept behind “Much to Mail” is based on some of the artist’s early observations and their implications: public payphones at train stations, making a phone call while on the move, being on the move with a mobile phone. The arrangement of the sculpture’s individual wooden figures reflects the fact that people can be at the same place talking into their mobile phones without talking to each other; and that they can keep in touch with others without being in touch with the people around them. Mobile communication devices foster a synchronicity of intimacy and distance, making non-verbal expression a part of everyday perception. Mobile communication appears to dominate our reality and be indispensable. “Much to Mail’s” aims to increase our awareness of mobile communication as well as to bring about its reconfiguration.
