For the exhibition in the Galerie Werft 11, Thea Bjerg has created a series of works that hover at the limits between jewellery, textiles and fashion. Inspired by natural shapes such as sea anemones, sea creatures and corals, she creates her pleated works from silk and polyester fibres.
She obtains her transparent, stratified and independent expression by combining laser cutting and ultrasound techniques with her own craft methods. These methods allow her to work fine peekaboo designs and long fringes, among others, without the fabric fraying.
Thea Bjerg about her folding and pleating method: “Layers have always fascinated me. They have tales to tell. Both my own in addition to those which the beholders themselves place in the works. Layers are reminiscent of a drama, without dramatising. My works are described as sculptural, sensual and sophisticated, but I always endeavour however to retain the impression of a certain plainness”.
